Red Eared Slider Diseases

We will discuss a few common slider diseases here.

Swollen Eyes
This is likely caused by unclean water. This can be treated by diluted boric acid. Water need to be changed right away. Tank needs to be cleaned too. If the condition continues, a vet should be contacted.

Soft Shell
Soft Shell is a common problem among captive turtles. The lack of calcium is the main cause of it. Sunlight for outdoor environment and full-spectrum light for indoor environment can help your slider fight soft shell Another solution is to increase calcium intake for your slider. You may mix calcium powder with slider's food.

Respiratory problem
Respiratory problem is usually caused by cold weather and moisture. If your slider has runny noses and refuse to eat, it is recommended to separate your slider since it is a contagious disease. Take it to a warm environment will cure this disease. If the condition persists more than a week, take it to a veterinarian.

Salmonella
Salmonella is an intestinal infection bought on by bacteria. Sliders contact the bacteria from
infected sliders, dirty water, or food sources. Salmonella is contagious. Children are easy victims of this infection. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling sliders.
